Sulfur dyes are naturally insoluble in water. To enable dyeing, they must first be converted into their soluble leuco form using a reducing agent (antioxidant). Once applied to cellulose-based materials, oxidation restores the dye to its original water-insoluble state, ensuring excellent wash fastness.
